Refugiums
A refugium is a separate tank attached to the main aquarium system. The most commom use of the refugiums is to grow macro or micro algae, algae feed on nitrate so many people use refugium to remove nitrate.
Do I need one?
If you have a regular aquarium system and nitrate has been a problem for you, a refugium is a good idea. However, if you use the Hiatt filtration system you wouldn't need a refugium, because you won't have any nitrate, the algae will actually die because there is nothing for them to feed on.
You could have a refugium, not to grow algae but for grow live food such as copepods. These little critter serve as live food for fish live in the main display tank, you can also house odd inverts or animals you don't want it to be in your main display tank.
